How You Can Minimize Interruptions
In business, three things are most valuable- you, your people, and your customers. To be able to accomplish your objectives, being able to get the most out of these three factors is required. You, as the business owner, hold a crucial role. Therefore you need to ensure that you put in your best efforts in managing your business.
Essence of Time Management
Time management affects the flow of business; if you make the most of your time, you could accomplish more. If you waste time, you could end up with losses. A person who does not know how to manage his time could get his business in trouble. Who could become a successful entrepreneur watching TV and doing unproductive work all day? No one.
Factors Affecting Time Management
Many things could affect the way you manage your own time, especially if you do not have to answer to a boss. Here are some of them:
1. Lack of discipline. When you keep on telling yourself that you can always “do it tomorrow” it significantly impacts your productivity. Why do it tomorrow when you could accomplish it today?
2. Lack of clear goals. When you don’t know where you want to be and how you can get there, you could easily lose focus. And when you lose focus, it is difficult to work on your daily tasks.
3. Lack of motivation. People who do not know what it is they are working for are those who do not really work hard at achieving anything. They need to realize the long-term benefits of their efforts; they should see it clearly otherwise they will not have the drive or the passion to keep working.
4. Lack of planning. Going into battle without proper training and sufficient knowledge is disastrous. It is very important that you plan ahead; think of what you need to do and how you will do it. Preparation is key to effective self-management.
5. Lack of understanding. When people do not understand concepts, ideas, and instructions, they tend to lose interest and when this happens, they will procrastinate; as a result, nothing gets anything done. Make sure you understand things clearly before accepting and doing a certain task.
Interruptions and Time Management
Interruptions are perceived as normal especially if you are a home-based worker, entrepreneur, or business owner. Kids, family members, and friends could easily disrupt your day. Kids will come to you to get some attention, and friends would call you or visit you at home for some tête-à-tête. Before you know it, it’s already time to prepare dinner and you have wasted your day doing unproductive activities.
Interruptions can tremendously waste your time which is why managing interruptions is a requirement for anyone who wishes to be productive in his business.
Managing Interruptions
The first thing to do is to determine the nature of the interruption, and decide the best way to handle it. Judge well if it’s worth your time or not.
Secondly, set a schedule for everything, regardless if it is personal or business. Determine a time during the day when you can be with family and friends, and also know when it is time to focus only on work. Set a schedule and stick to it.
Lastly, have the courage to say “yes” or “no” depending on your situation. Do not be afraid to decline an offer when you think it cannot be done, especially if this will disrupt your day-to-day tasks.
